Standing Seam Metal Roof – Uses and Types

When the time comes for a new roof or a replacement roof for your home or commercial building, it is worth considering a standing seam metal roof. A metal roof has many advantages over more traditional pitched roofing systems.

Advantages of a Standing Seam Metal Roof

Here are the 5 top reasons to consider this type of roofing system.

  • Durable: A metal roof is lightweight, yet it has an impressive ability to weather the elements. It can withstand hail storms, heavy rains, snowfall, and high winds. This material is also resistant to the effects of environmental and atmospheric pollutants.

  • Energy Efficient: Standing seam metal roofs are available in a variety of finishes and colours that can reflect light and heat from the sun so that you can save on summer cooling costs. Summers in the Lost Angeles areacan be extremely warm.

  • Fire Resistant: Metal is naturally non-combustible, making this roofing material naturally fire-resistant.

  • Longevity: A metal roof is known to have a lifespan of 50 to 70 years, as illustrated in the 19th-century barn structures found across the country, as well as in ancient Roman buildings, such as the Pantheon.

  • Sustainable: Metal construction materials leave a less negative impact on the environment than other roofing products. Steel and copper roofs are 100% recyclable.

Standing seam metal roofs are available in a variety of materials and finishes. The most common metal roofs are aluminium, aluminium/zinc alloy, steel, and copper.

Certain metals are available with an applied coating, commonly an enamel finish, that can be in almost any colour. Copper roofs can be sealed to retain the natural brown colour or left raw to age with a naturally oxidized patina – think of a historical green or antique appearance. Steel is commonly available with a natural grey or silver-tone finish.

Types of Metal Roofs

Standing seam metal roofs rely on integral seams to interlock or join the metal panels to form a watertight barrier. These roofs are available in a few different types that include varieties of seaming methods. The 3 most common are continuous seam positive locking, mechanically fastened in-field, and non-structural panels.

Continuous seam positive locking:

A continuous seam metal roof design uses an integral seam system. Each panel snaps into place over the adjacent panel. The panels are then fastened with clips. Seam caps are not required for this method. Continuous seam systems can be fastened directly to the roof deck substrate. The positive locking installation requires less field labor.

Mechanically seamed in-field:

A standing seam metal roof system can be mechanically seamed at the job site during installation. This type of roof system offers a variety of seam heights and different profiles and appearances. Mechanical seams installed in the field allow for curved roofs as well as angular pitched roofs. Higher seams can actually add structural stability to the roofing system. The panels are installed using a fixed or sliding clip system. Sliding clips provide greater tolerance to temperature fluctuations because they can actually move during the expansion and contraction of the panels.

Non-structural panels:

Non-structural panel roofs utilize a 2 section system approach. One section is flat while the other is a raised batten type of seam. The seam section snaps into place over clips that protect and conceal the fasteners. This standing seam metal roof system has to be installed over a solid substrate. Curved and tapered panels are available with this metal roof system.
